To culminate the visit to Madrid, I did an optional excursion to Montserrat which is a multi-peaked mountain and site of the Benedictine Monk retreat. The mountain is a popular attraction because of sightings of the Virgin Mary.
Since sightings of Virgin Mary the mountain has attracted pilgrims who do pilgrimages up to the cave which has been marked with an Holy Grotto and is recognized as an holy place.
Similar to Lourdes and other locations where there have been sightings of the Virgin Mary, there is a pipe that flows fresh mountain water. It is believed that drinking this water can provide physical as well as emotional wellness and cure ailments.
As someone who is strong in their faith I drank some of the water and filled a bottle. Hopefully I can carry it around for the duration of my trip without the bottle bursting and spilling.
I am a stronger believer and this has even inspired me to visit Lourdes to drink and collect the spring water. It’s funny how many things I have checked off my bucket list and have now added as a result of traveling :).
In conclusion, the trip to Montserrat was a great way for me to relax and get in tune with my faith. Firstly, the drive is very breezy and is an escape from the Barcelona heat. The unusual rock and stunning views make the trip a must! To top it off I got the chance to visit an holy site!
